When pondering the subject of dust mites many questions arise, but very few actually know any information pertaining to a creature that is found by the millions within almost every home.

What Are Dust Mites? Many people know dust mites exist but know very little about them. Dust mites are living organisms that feed, breathe and defecate just like any other animal. They are actually from the spider family and have eight legs just like a spider. They live on average for about 30 days for a male and 2 months for an impregnated female whom lays around 100 eggs during its entire lifespan.

How Big are They? Dust Mites are extremely small in fact you need a microscope or very strong magnifying glass in order to see one. They are about half a millimeter big.

What is the Number of Dust Mites which Inhabit my House and where exactly do they reside? Due to everyone's unique house set up, it is impossible to determine an exact amount of dust mites living within a person's household; within a typical mattress millions of dust mites live and thrive. Dust mites take residence in a variety of places in your house including your pillows, sheets, blankets, chairs, carpets, and couches.

Why Do They Live In Bed and Couch of All Places? Dust mites enjoy places with a high amount of humidity and they receive that humidity when you perspire, breathe or drool. They also like to go into places where they are not exposed to the sun or vacuum cleaner. They dig down deep into the carpeting and grab onto the carpet fibers to prevent them from getting sucked out by a vacuum cleaner or beat out by the brushroll.

What is it Dust Mites Feed On? The answer to this one is simple. Dust mites like to feed on you. Dust mites thrive and feed on the dead skin that sheds off of humans on a daily basis. A solitary day of shredded skin from a human is enough to feed thousands of dust mites.

Wouldn't it be Smarter to Call Them Skin Mites Instead of Dust Mites? Dust in mostly composed of dead skin. The dust found within your house, in places such as the TV, or in the air is actually dead skin. Because a majority of dust is comprised of the dead skin dust mites feed on, dust mites are called "dust" mites.
