Simple steps to rid your home of dust mite allergies
Written by Kristina Brown

As you read this your pillows, blankets, carpeting, chairs and entire house is being crawled by scary eight legged creatures. As you breathe these creatures are feeding on your dead skin and defecating all over your household. Despite being only half a millimeter large, these creatures are powerful enough to trigger allergy symptoms. What are these awful creatures? Dust mites. A large percentage of people do not comprehend that there is massive amount of these creatures living in their house, and even less people understand how to remove them from their household.

Wash Your Sheets and Blankets in Hot Water or Freeze Them - Dust mites like humid, warm weather and do not do well under extreme conditions. Washing your sheets and blankets in hot water (130 degrees F and over) will kill a majority of the dust mites and while freezing your blankets takes longer (about a day to kill them) it will also do the job. Washing your sheets after freezing them is a good idea to rid the sheets of fecal matter and dead mites because the washing machine will agitate the blankets and cause mites to fall off.

Kill Mites by Using a Power head or Mini Turbine Tool - These vacuum tools will create agitation on items such as your mattress and couch fibers and help remove dust mite feces, deceased mites, and live mites. A power head or mini turbine head rotates at high velocity speeds, whipping the mites out of your mattress, couch and chairs.

Wrap Items such as your Couches, Chairs, and Mattresses with a Plastic Lining - One of the reasons areas such as couches, chairs and mattresses become breading grounds for dust mites is because the fibers give the mites something to latch on to and nest deep within. Coating furniture with plastic will prevent mites from having something to latch onto. It is advisable that you vacuum before covering furniture so you can destroy existing mites then put preventive measures against having more.

Purchase a Dehumidifier - Dust mites flourish in humid places, simply removing the moisture in your household would create adverse living environment for the dust mites. Less moisture in the air means less dust mites within your house.

Get Them Into the Sun - Let them Bake! Dust mites do not like sunlight, which is one reason why they dig so deep into the fibers. Opening the blinds in your house and allowing more sunlight to hit your chairs, couch, bed etc. will help rid your house of dust mites.

Purchase an IQAir Purifier - An additional method for cutting down on the amount of dust mites in your house is to purchase an IQAir purifier. Sensibly priced and superior to other air purifiers, the IQAir should be heavily considered by anyone trying to cut down on dust mites. The reason for the IQAirs supremacy is its ability to remove the dust (otherwise known as dead skin, which is what dust mites feed and thrive on), and it removes the dust mite feces that often trigger allergenic reactions. The IQAir also effectively removes other contaminates such as pollen which cause and trigger allergic reactions. It is important when purchasing an air purifier be sure the air purifier is not what is called 'ozone producing.' An 'ozone producing' air purifier is harmful to your and irritates your lungs. For this reason it is crucial that you purchase an air purifier that is not 'ozone producing', such as the IQAir.

Purchase a Miele Vacuum Cleaner - If done with a proper vacuum cleaner, daily vacuuming will slash the amount of dust mites taking residency in your house by a large percentage. The brushroll creates agitation that beats dust mites and their feces out of the carpets fibers. Not all vacuums have the ability to effectively pick up and contain the dust mites; the vacuum must be a bagged HEPA certified vacuum such as a Miele vacuum cleaner. It is vital to bear in mind that just because a vacuum has a HEPA filter does not mean it has a sealed system, which guarantees HEPA filtration. If a vacuum cleaner does not have a sealed system it will leak out contaminated air, despite it having a HEPA filter within it. One of the solitary HEPA certified vacuums with a sealed system is the Miele vacuum cleaner. Miele is one of the only vacuum brands that cleans your carpet effectively and successfully removes dust mites and their feces from your house.

Get a Miele Vacuum Cleaner - Vacuuming your house daily will greatly reduce the amount of dust mites in your household. The vacuum agitates your fibers and draws up the dust mites along with their feces. However not all vacuum cleaners will filter out the dust mites as well as you would believe. In order to contain these dust mites you need a bagged HEPA certified vacuum cleaner such a Miele. Many vacuum brands have a HEPA filter but not HEPA filtration. This is because many vacuum cleaners do not have a sealed system that ensures all dirt and dust is be filtered through the HEPA filter. Many vacuum cleaners leak the dirty air out of the vacuum cleaner way before the air comes even close to the HEPA filter. To ensure that no dust mites are reentering back into your house you need a HEPA certified vacuum cleaner. One of the only HEPA certified vacuums is the Miele, which will not only clean your carpets but also filter out the dust mites and their feces. Watch Out!!! Not all Vacuum Cleaners that have a HEPA filter have true HEPA filtration. Remember Miele is a great brand to keep in mind because they have tried and true HEPA certified clean air leaving the vacuum.

At this very moment a multitude of dust mites are present within your home. However with these tips and techniques you can brutally slash down the number of dust mites within your house, prevent the amount of allergic reactions you experience and leave your house healthier and happier.
